He was inducted into the army on October 5, 1943. He was sent to Ft. Blanding, Florida where he received a chauffeur's training. After a furlough of eight days at home, he was send to Ft. Ord, California. He then went overseas and landed in Goodenough Island in the South Pacific on April 12, 1944. From there he was transferred to the New Guinea Islands, and was trained as a ranger and served in a scouting squad. He fell victim to the explosion of a Japanese shell on his post with eight others of his squad on October 21, 1944.
