In 1944 he was drafted at the age of 17 into the U.S. Army. He spoke German and was assigned to serve at a Prisoner of War camp in Northern France, guarding and looking after the German prisoners of war. General Patton later sent him on a special assignment to serve as a guard to the hotel room where Truman, Churchill and Stalin met and discussed Germany at the end of the war, which later referred to as the Potsdam Conference.
