He enlisted in August 1943 at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He trained with glider troops with the 880th Airborne Engineers and was sent to New Guinea. He received an appointment to Officers Candidates School in Brisbane, Australia, and was commissioned a second lieutenant and was assigned to the 310th Bombardment Wing, Fifth Air Force, as an engineering officer. He served in the Philippine Islands, Okinawa and the occupation forces in Japan. He stayed in Japan as a base engineer for a year. He was promoted on December 25, 1945, to first lieutenant and returned to the United States in August 1946.
