On February 7, 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. After boot training at Manhattan Beach, New York, he attended Petty Officer's School. He served at the receiving station at Norfolk, Virginia, then at the District Coast Guard Office, 10th Naval District, in San Juan, Puerto Rico; also aboard the Coast Guard Cutter 83-455, Caribbean Sea Area; later at the Receiving Station, Philadelphia; and finally at Separation Center No. 3, Brooklyn New York. On June 26, 1946, he received his honorable discharge.
