On April 28, 1941, he was called to serve in the Coast Artillery of the U.S. Army. With Battalion A, 26th Separate Coast Artillery, he began his basic training as radio operator at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Then he was stationed at Fort Stark, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and at Fort McKinley, Maine for further training. Starting in September of 1942, he was stationed in Iceland. In April 1943 he was promoted to the rank Corporal. He was discharged on October 31, 1945, at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
