Activity During WWII

In September of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Forces and went into active service as an Air Cadet on March 3, 1943. He was sent overseas July 20, 1944, and served as a Radioman and Gunner on a B-24 Bomber. On September 30, 1944, he was shot down and interned as a prisoner or war at Stalag Tuft No. 4. He received the Purple Heart for burns and wounds he received on his last flight. In addition, he was award the Air medal, three Battle Stars, two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Soldier's Medal. On May 13, 1945, he was released with the help of the Russians and returned to the United States.
