He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 24, becoming a bombardier. He died in battle, aged 25, on January 29, 1944, when his plane, flying over Hamburg, Germany, was shot down. He received a purple heart and two bronze stars. He was buried in a private Jewish cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
