He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was initially stationed at Kennedy general Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee. Later he served at Camp Gordon Station Hospital, Georgia, and at the Mayo Foundation Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was engaged in surgery. In June 1944 he went overseas with the 141st general Hospital. He later served with the Evacuation Hospital in England and on the continent in Germany. He was awarded the European Theatre Medal with the Rhineland and Central Europe Battle Stars, and the American Theatre Ribbon. On May 28, 1946 he was discharged from Camp Atterbury, Indiana.
