On December 20, 1943 he was called into the U.S. Navy. he began his basic training at Sampson, New York with Unit 2, aboard the USS Shadwell. He served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. The Shadwell was damaged by a enemy torpedo plane during the Philippine Invasion. For participation in the battle he was awarded the American, Asiatic-Pacific, Philippine Commendations and two Battle Stars. On November 8, 1945 he was discharged at Lido Beach, New York after three years of service.
