He joined the U.S. Navy in January 1940 after graduating high school in Oakland, Nebraska in May 1939. He received his medical training at the naval base in San Diego. Not long after he completed his training he was assigned to a field hospital in Papua, New Guinea. He was dedicated to saving the lives of the wounded U.S. Marines that were fighting in the Pacific theater of Operations.
