He was drafted into the U.S. Army Infantry and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His family feared he was missing in action while he was recovering from combat injuries in a hospital in France. He was transferred stateside on September 5, 1945 to Camp Butner Hospital Center in Butner, North Carolina for rehab.
