He was a student at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut during WWII. In 1943, he put his studies on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946. He returned to Yale an completed his studies graduating with his "Class of 1945W". The "W" designates that this was a wartime class with which which a four year degree was completed in thirty-six months.
