He was 18 when on December 7, 1941, while serving on the USS Oklahoma, he was killed when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. His remains were not identified and they were buried in mass graves at the Punchbowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2015, the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency began exhuming the remains. His remains were positively identified by dental and DNA records. On July 31, 2021, his remains will be buried in Burnside, Kentucky.
