Born in Vienna, Austria. Immigrated through New York City on 20 July 1938. Enlisted in the Army Air Corps after graduating with the Class of 1943 at the University of Nebraska. Became a naturalized citizen on 11 June 1943 while attending the U.S. Army Air Forces Radio Operator-Mechanic (ROM) technical school at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Assigned as Radio Operator-Mechanic (ROM) aboard B-29 Superfortress serial #44-69751, nicknamed "HOMING DE-VICE" tail code Z-Square-31, 882nd Bomber Squadron, 500th Bombardment Group (VH), 73rd Bomb Wing, XXI Bomber Command, 20th Air Force stationed at Isely Field on Saipan in the Mariana Islands, Pacific Theatre of Operations.
