He entered the U.S. Army in January 1945. While en route to the Philippine Islands, he was selected as one of twelve men to become military police (MP) and was assigned to Company B, 800th Military Police Battalion, serving first in the Philippine Islands, followed by service as part of the occupation forces in Japan.
