He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during his senior year of high school. He was then assigned to the Brooklyn's Navy Pier where he boarded a communication flag ship to serve in the South Pacific. Then he was assigned to a Naval Hospital in Panama. He was discharged after serving two years.
