He received a commission as an Ordnance officer in the U.S. Army. After some initial stateside assignments, he was tapped to take command of an Ordnance company and charged with preparing it operationally for subsequent deployment to Europe in support of the war effort. His company provided support operations across the European Theater of Operations, including the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria. In 1946 he returned home.
