He worked as a welder and welding instructor in a Kaiser shipyard on the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. He worked for the Oregon ship building corporation one of three Kaiser owned shipyards in the Portland area. They build many liberty ships such as the star of Oregon which was launched September 27, 1941 on Liberty Fleet Day. The Kaiser shipyards operated from 1941-1945 and they built over 600 liberty ships.
