Rank: Second Lieutenant. Inducted into the United States Army October 1, 1942 with induction at Denver, Colorado. As a graduate of the Officer’s Candidate School, he received his commission, with the rank of Second Lieutenant. After completing the required training phases, he was deployed to the European Theater of Operations. He served with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, and a subordinate unit of the 30th Infantry ‘Old Hickory’ Division, attached to the U.S. First Army. His division participated in the invasion of Germany’s Fortress Europe, D-Day June 6, 1944. Monday, July 17, 1944 he was killed in action, while participating in the Battle of St. Lo, France. Personnel from a Grave Registration Company buried him in the La Cambe Battlefield Cemetery, Isigny, France. In the post-war era, this Soldiers’ family requested that he be buried with Military Honors at the Normandy American Cemetery Location: Colleville-sur-Mer, France. This American Patriot received the following decorations posthumously. Silver Star and the Purple Heart. The Silver Star was awarded to the Lieutenant for Distinguished Gallantry in Action and Valor in Combat against an enemy force, and the Purple Heart, for his Heroism and ultimate sacrifice.
