He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in September 1942 and went overseas December 1943. Served with the 15th Air Force and was assigned to 450th Bomb Group Cottontails as a maintenance technician and airplane mechanic based in Italy. Awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation with oakleaf cluster and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with eleven bronze stars. Discharged in September 1945.
