Eenlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and spent almost three years as a combat photographer in the South Pacific with the 4026th Signal Photo Battalion during WWII. He filmed at the 1945 invasion of the Lingayen Gulf in the Philippine Islands and was in Japan to photograph the surrender on board the USS Missouri. He received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained and four bronze arrowheads for his military participation in assault landings.
