He served as a First Lieutenant with the 25th Armored Engineer Battalion, Company B, 6th Armored Division. He fought at the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and earned the Bronze Star and Silver Star Medals for achievement in extricating his platoon from a trap near Bastogne during the German breakthrough in December 1944.
