SERVED AS PART OF NAVAL ARMED GUARD ON THE AMERICAN STEAMSHIP, "WEST PORTAL", THAT WAS ASSIGNED TO CONVOY SC-118 SAILING FROM NEW YORK TO LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND. LOST AT SEA WHEN SHIP WAS TORPEDOED BY GERMAN U-413 IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC ON 5 FEBRUARY 1943. AWARDED THE PURPLE HEART.
