He served in U.S. Army Air Corps as a combat fighter pilot with the 332nd Fighter Group's 99th Fighter Squadron, best known as the Tuskegee Airmen, "Red Tails" or "Black Birdmen". He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for aerial action on 18 July 1944 and the Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters.
