He entered into active service in the U.S. Navy on 11 November 1942. He was sent to the Great Lakes Navy Training school for his basic training. He received further training at the naval facilities in Chicago, Illinois, and College Station, Texas. Further training was provided at Naval Air Technical Training Center, Ward Island, near Corpus Christi, Texas. After his extensive training as an Aviation Radio Technician he worked on developing the Navy’s use of radar at the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Maryland. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on 12 December 1945.
