Entered the U.S. Navy in May 1944 and served as a Coxswain Mate, operating the Higgins Landing Craft, in the battles of Iwo Jima in second and third waves and Okinawa landings. He also served on the USS Bladen (APA-63) and USS Roosevelt (CVB-42) Aircraft Carrier and was at the helm of The Roosevelt on its maiden voyage. He was awarded the Victory, American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific Medals and was honorably discharged on 7 September 1946.
