He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1941. After graduation from boot camp, he was stationed aboard the light cruiser USS OMAHA where he served as a Carpenters Mate/Diver. David was aboard the OMAHA when it captured the German ship Odenwald. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1946. During his service, He received the following awards: Navy Good Conduct, American Defense with “A” device, European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign with three stars, Asiatic–Pacific Campaign with one star and the World War II Victory.
