He graduated from West Point in 1931, commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. In 1941 assigned to Hawaii and was in command of a 16-inch gun battery defending Pearl Harbor when World War II began. Commanded various artillery units in the Pacific and was an artillery officer and G3 at Saipan during the war. Took part in the initial landing operations in the Marianas Islands. Was G-3 (Operations) and Artillery Officer of the Saipan Garrison Force at time of reassignment to Washington in 1945.
