Graduated from U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1933, and during the war served with the 9th Air Force in Europe as a meteorologist. Was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services with Headquarters, NINTH Air Force, from 1943 to 1945. Also received two Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star and Air Medal, along with medals from France and Belgium.
