He served as a Drill Sergeant at the beginning of World War II at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri training draftees. He was later deployed to the Philippines where he was wounded in combat. He was medically treated, and was returned to battle. He was wounded a second time in combat, having been shot in the head. He was returned home, and made a full recovery.
