She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from 1941 to 1946. Initially, serving in Hawaii, she and her nurses landed on Saipan-the first nurses to do so-to establish permanent facilities treating military and civilian casualties. In August 1944, she was awarded the Bronze Star.
