He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1943 to 1946. He was sent overseas in September 1944 and served in the 70th Infantry Division and the 29th Infantry Division and led a rifle platoon into Germany. Became an aide to Major General Leroy Watson. He accompanied General Watson to the Nuremberg Trials where General Watson oversaw security for the Nuremberg War Crime Trials. Received the Silver Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.
