Rank: Private First Class. He was inducted into the United States Marine Corps November 12, 1938 at San Francisco, California, with recruit training at the Marine Corps Base in San Diego, California, and infantry training at Camp Pendleton Oceanside, California. After completing his required training phases, he was deployed to Shanghai, China with the Fourth Marine Regiment, assigned to Delta Company, an element of the First Battalion on 14 November 1940. The regiment relocated, to Manila shortly before the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces invaded the Philippine Islands. His unit was based at Fort Mills Location: Corregidor Island AKA: the Rock, where he participated in the Battle of Corregidor. On Wednesday, May 6, 1942 he became a captive, when Corregidor was seized by the Imperial Forces, and transferred to an unknown Prisoner of War Camp on Luzon Island. Thursday, October 8, 1942 he boarded the Japanese ‘Hell Ship’ Tottori Maru Destination: Pusan, Korea. He was incarcerated at the Hoten Prisoner of War Camp Location: Mukden, Manchuria. On Tuesday, December 22, 1942 he died of unknown causes, with burial in the Prisoner Cemetery. In the post-war era, this Marines’ family requested that he be buried with Military Honors at the Lakeside Cemetery, located at Canon City, Colorado. In his Memory and Honor, this American Patriot was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously, for his Heroism and ultimate sacrifice.
