He was drafted into the US Army Air Corps. He trained as a mechanic before serving as a nose gunner on a B-24, participating in 30 missions from 1943-1945. Participated in the Air Offensive of Europe, the Allied invasion of Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland Offensive. Received the French Legion of Honor, Distinguished Flying Cross, the Good Conduct Medal and Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.
