He served in the US Army from 1944 to 1945. He was sent to South Devon, England and participated in Exercise Tiger, a training exercise in preparation for D-Day. On D-Day, after storming the beaches, he lead a squad through hedgerows to Saint-Lo and then fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Discharged August 1945. Received the Bronze Star.
