In 1943, at the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II. He was soon on his way to the South Pacific as a Seabee in a construction battalion attached to the U.S. Marines. He served as a Seaman First Class in the Central Pacific theater until the end of the war.
