He served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He was commissioned at Yale University and studied Radar at Harvard University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Assigned to the China Burma Theatre, he reported to Central India where the B-29 bombers were first based. Subsequently, he was transferred to the 1st Troop Carrier Squadron in Assam, India in support of Merrill's Marauders and later to the Mars Task Force in the reopening of the Burma Road. He was Group Communications and Radar Officer in the Tenth Air Force at the end of the war and was transferred to China in the supply and relocation of Chiang Kai-Shek's troops to strategic areas in China.
