Served with the 10th Mountain Division, 87th Infantry Regiment, Company H. He joined the Division after it had already gone to combat in Italy in 1945, therefore, becoming a replacement soldier, covering for the many casualties suffered in earlier battles. His military occupational specialty was 1607, or Semi-Skilled Heavy Mortar Crewman and later changed to 605, or Heavy Machine Gunner. While combat was almost continuous for four months, the 10th Mountain Division fought three major battles against the German Army in Italy: February 18-25, March 2-6, and April 14-May 2, 1945. He was seriously injured while stationed in Italy, earning the Purple Heart.
