He earned his Naval Aviator wings in March 1943. In 1944, he joined Fighter Squadron 80 (VF-80) better known as "Vorse Vipers" on board the USS Ticonderoga (CV-14). On December 1944, he was credited with four aerial victories over the Philippines and became an ace pilot. On January 3, 1945, he shot down three more aircraft while manning Ticonderoga's anti-aircraft guns. Bomber Fighter Squadron 80 split off from VF-80. Over the span of two days, he shot down nine enemy aircraft. By February 17, 1945, he'd only flown six sorties, but had taken out 19 planes-10 with VF-80 and nine while flying with VBF-80. Received the Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 5/16 Gold Stars, Air Medal with three 5/16 Gold Stars, Navy Unit Commendation with one 3/16 bronze star and American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp.
