He died on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. The ship sustained multiple torpedo hits and capsized quickly. On December 17, 2018, his remains were identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Department. His remains were buried on June 29, 2019 at Greenhill Cemetery in Laramie, Wyoming.
