He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1944. He did his basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois and then did amphibious training at Little Creek, Virginia. From there he went by train to San Diego and was assigned to the USS LSM 455. His ship sailed for the Pacific theatre, but between the Philippines and Japan, Japan surrendered. He returned to the states and was discharged in May 1946.
