Assigned to the 254th Port Battalion, he was involved in supply and Equipment Movement. Shortly after the assault on Normandy Beach on D-Day, he was bringing equipment and supplies to the Allied troops on the coast to the beach and recovering the remains of soldiers killed in the attack for return to England. On his final trip, the truck that he was on delivering supplies to the advancing troops was hit by a German ballistic missile. The truck driver was killed and he received a large gash on his head in the crash. He was evacuated for treatment and extended recovery at a US Military hospital in England. Upon recovering, he continued to deliver supplies, equipment, and mail to advancing US units through France and Germany.
