He was a US Army Air Corps ace who shot down nine enemy aircraft in the European Theater. On May 30, 1944, his P-51B was shot down near Tiddische, Germany. After parachuting out and landing safely, he surrendered to German soldiers. Two German Nationals approached and took custody of him. He was taken into the woods and shot several times. The men were found guilty of killing a prisoner of war. He posthumously received the Congressional Gold Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
