Served four years in the Army of which two and one half years was spent in the European Theatre of Operations. As a first lieutenant, he served on the Fifth Army Front in Italy. He served as an anti-tank platoon leader. When serving with the First Armored Division, he was an automotive and reclamation/evacuation section leader. He received a Bronze Star and five Battle Participation Stars.
