He was a member of the United States Army, serving in World War II in Company E, 507th Parachute Infantry. In the Army he received the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, EAMET Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In his 507th United States Army Company, he was crowned the Lightweight Boxing Champion. The 507th PIR first saw combat during the Normandy invasion - 6 June 1944.
