Enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1939 at age 18. He was a member of the famed 1st Cavalry Division at a time when they were riding horses while patrolling the Mexican border from Fort Bliss, Texas. His division was shipped to Australia in July 1943 and participated in General MacArthur's "island hopping" campaign through the Admiralty Islands, including combat on Los Negros and Manus Island. His division landed on Leyte Island in October 1944 and participated in the campaign to liberate the Philippines. He may have been briefly captured by the Japanese.
