He served in the US Navy in the Pacific. He drove a LCVP "Higgins Boat" during the invasions of Saipan, Guam, Tinian and Peleliu. On February 18, 1945, his ship was anchored off of Okinawa and he drove his Higgins boat in on the second wave.
