He was in the US Navy from 1942 to March 1946 serving on two destroyer escorts, the USS Lowe and the USS Moseley as a gunner. He was aboard the USS Moseley on anti-submarine patrol duty when the German submarine U-866 was sunk. Awarded the American Campaign Medal with one star for sinking the German sub. Received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
