Rank: Machinist’s Mate Third Class. He was inducted into the United States Navy October 4, 1939, at Denver, Colorado with Basic Military Training at the U.S. Naval Training Station San Diego, California. Upon his graduation from Boot Camp and along with any additional training; he was transferred to the USS Pecos Tanker (AO-6) for duty. Friday, January 23, 1942 the USS Pecos with her Shipmate’s departed Darwin, Australia and sailed to Surabaya, Indonesia Location: Northeastern border of Java Island, on the Madura Strait. While based at the Surabaya Port, she fueled Allied Ships. The Ship’s Captain Weigh Anchor and departed on 3 February 42, after an Imperial Japanese air raid made the port untenable. Sunday, March 1, 1942 at 12: 00 “High” Imperial Japanese Bombers, assigned to a Japanese Aircraft Carrier, bombed the USS Pecos and was severely damaged. In the “Mid-Afternoon” another strike occurred, and she went down with all hands. He was reported “Missing-in-Action” or Buried at Sea along with his gallant crew members, gone without a trace, and will “Remain on Eternal Patrol”. In remembrance of the brave, his name is permanently inscribed in the tablets of the missing, memorialized at Manila American Cemetery Location: Fort Bonifacio, Manila Philippines. In his Memory, this American Patriot was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously, for his Heroism and ultimate sacrifice. He served his Country with Pride and Honor.
