Activity During WWII

He served during WWII 23 Jul 1942-18 Dec 1945. He shipped out on the SS Lurline to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. He was in the unit VS57 which was a scouting squadron where he was a rear seat gunner. His job was to escort ships in and out of the Noumea Harbor and to patrol the island. His squadron sank one Japanese submarine. He served approximately two years on the island. After New Caledonia he was sent to Corpus Christi, Texas and was stationed there for a year. He was given an honorable discharge on 18 Dec 1945. His discharge papers list that he was part of the Fleet Air Base Unit One, Squadron 57, NAAS Cuddihy Field.
